Description
A masterful collection of stories in the Cornish Language. The book contains the stories ‘A Vo Den’, ‘An Anwodhvos’, ‘Demelsa Nankarrek’ and ‘Fell yw an Nos’. The stories are suitable for readers at the fourth grade and above.
‘A Vo Den’ asks what it means to be a man in a world of smugglers, poverty and the struggle both to survive and to find meaning and morality in historical Cornwall. When Kitto Lanyon’s father Samuel dies suddenly, he is thrust into the role of man of the house at a young age, supporting his poor mother. What will it take to survive? Will he lose himself or find out who he is?
Set in early 20th century Cornwall, ‘An Anwodhvos’ is a mysterious tale of strange happenings, first at a séance at a gathering of amateur spiritualists at the mansion of Lady Trang, but soon in the wider community, including at the local cinema during a packed showing. With panic rife, the government becomes involved. What is causing this terror?
Taking place in the 19th century, ‘Demelsa Nankarrek’ is presented as the diaries of the title character and the village’s new priest, Jermyn Hocken. Is this a love story or something darker? What is sweet Demelsa planning and is Jermyn’s infatuation with her suitable for a clergyman?
‘Fell yw an Nos’ is an 18th century tale. Sir Lokryn, a local landowner and judge, is still wrapped in sorrow over the death of his wife, the mother of his children Gweniver and Pyran. Are the erratic sentences he imposes local criminals to be attributed only to grief or a cruel turn of his character? What effect will they have on the community, his sanity and even his family?
