Following our re-publication of Hwedhlow a-dhiworth an Orsedh last year, the Kowethas is keen to showcase more creative work in Kernewek. We are planning a new anthology with new content written by you.
We are looking for prose or poetry in Kernewek on one of the following themes:
- Skat dhe Skommow (Smashed to Splinters)
- Pols Gwander (A Moment of Weakness)
- Mires war Dhelergh (Looking Back)
- Ryb an Avon (By the River)
- Hanternos (Midnight)
We encourage entrants to think beyond the tried-and-tested and to reflect a language that is vibrant and living, that is more than an ornament for a chocolate box.
How to Enter
To enter, send your work as a .docx, .odt or PDF in an attachment to [email protected] with the subject header “Kesstrif Skrifa 26”. Please tell us which theme your work is for if it is not the title of the work.
The deadline is midnight on the 17th May 2026. We hope to inform winners in early June.
Details
Entries should be limited to 2,000 words for prose and 50 lines for poetry. We are not looking for translations or non-fiction at this time.
Entries are welcome at any level of fluency. A good story can be told with simple grammar and we would love to hear from new writers.
Entries will be judged anonymously by the Publications Subcommittee on their creative merit and on the style and skilful use of their Cornish. We care less about missed mutations and perfect punctuation than we do about making the language come alive on the page.
Entries are accepted in any orthography or variety of Kernewek and we hope to see the diversity of Cornish represented in the finished book. We will work with successful entrants on any necessary corrections to their work.
Entries must be unpublished except where they have only previously been published in An Gannas, on personal websites or on social media.
Entries must be your own work and we do not accept any AI-assisted or AI-generated work. We will accept work written collaboratively. Multiple submissions are accepted, as are simultaneous ones.
The prize will be publication in the finished book, plus a physical copy of the printed book. Copyright will remain with the writer, but we reserve the non-exclusive right to reproduce the work in print, digital and audio form.
